Located in Costa, a small village near Tizzano Val Parma, the Parish Church of San Pietro (Pieve di San Pietro) is one of the most fascinating examples of Romanesque religious architecture in the Parma Apennines.
Standing on the summit of Monte Rotondo, the church enjoys a panoramic position overlooking the Parma and Parmossa valleys, surrounded by forests, hills and beautiful mountain landscapes.
The church has early medieval origins and was first documented in 1005. It was extensively rebuilt between the 11th and 12th centuries, possibly under the patronage of Matilda of Canossa.
Its architecture features a traditional basilica layout with three naves, massive stone columns and wooden roof structures.
One of its most distinctive elements is the imposing bell tower incorporated into the main façade, an unusual architectural feature inspired by medieval French churches.
During the 18th century, the building underwent significant Neoclassical modifications. Restoration work completed in 1964 recovered much of its original Romanesque appearance and revealed traces of 15th-century frescoes.
Today, the Pieve di San Pietro is an important historical and religious landmark, offering visitors an opportunity to discover the medieval heritage and natural beauty of Tizzano Val Parma.
