Located in the village of Casale, in the municipality of Sorbolo Mezzani, the Church of San Silvestro (Chiesa di San Silvestro) is a historic religious landmark that preserves centuries of artistic and architectural heritage.
Dedicated to Pope Saint Sylvester I, the church has ancient origins and was first mentioned in a document dating back to 1144, when it belonged to the Abbey of San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma.
The church has undergone several transformations over the centuries, gradually acquiring its present Neoclassical appearance during the 18th century.
Its elegant façade features a triangular pediment and a fresco depicting Pope Saint Sylvester I. A distinctive bell tower rises beside the building, adding character to the village landscape.
Inside, the church has a single nave with six side chapels, classical columns and decorative architectural details.
Particularly interesting are the surviving medieval frescoes, dating from the late 14th and early 15th centuries, including fragments depicting Saint Sebastian and the Last Supper.
Following damage caused by the 2012 earthquake, the church underwent extensive restoration and reopened for religious services in 2022.
Today, the Church of San Silvestro remains an important spiritual and historical landmark, offering visitors an opportunity to discover the religious traditions of the Bassa Parmense.
