Located in Mezzano Inferiore, in the municipality of Sorbolo Mezzani, the Church of Santa Maria Nascente (Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary) is a beautiful example of Baroque religious architecture in the Parma countryside.
The church represents an important part of the historical and spiritual heritage of the Bassa Parmense, preserving centuries of local traditions and artistic craftsmanship.
The first church was built between 1530 and 1563 to provide the growing village with its own place of worship.
Between 1734 and 1754, the building was reconstructed in Baroque style, with its design traditionally attributed to architect Antonio Maria Bettoli. The decorative work was completed in 1779.
Its elegant façade features classical columns, decorative details and a distinctive curved pediment.
Inside, visitors can admire a spacious single nave, side chapels, an impressive marble altar dating from 1799 and a beautifully crafted wooden choir from 1753.
Another important feature is the historic 1829 pipe organ, built by Giovanni and Stefano Cavalletti.
Following damage caused by the 2012 earthquake, the church underwent restoration and officially reopened on 20 September 2025, returning an important historic landmark to the local community.
