Rocca dei Rossi – San Secondo Parmense

Located in the historic centre of San Secondo Parmense, the Rocca dei Rossi is one of the most impressive Renaissance residences in the province of Parma.

Originally built as a medieval fortress, the castle was transformed over the centuries into an elegant noble residence by the powerful Rossi family, who played an important role in the political and cultural history of the region.

The Rocca is particularly famous for its magnificent frescoed halls, richly decorated ceilings and artistic cycles inspired by mythology, history and the achievements of the Rossi family.

Today, the castle is one of the main cultural attractions of the Bassa Parmense, offering visitors a fascinating journey through Renaissance art, architecture and local history.

History and Artistic Heritage

The castle's origins date back to the 15th century, when Pier Maria Rossi established the fortified residence. During the 16th century, it was expanded and decorated with extraordinary Renaissance frescoes.

Among its most remarkable rooms are the Hall of the Rossi Deeds (Sala delle Gesta Rossiane), illustrating thirteen important episodes in the family's history, and the Hall of the Golden Ass, inspired by the famous literary work of Apuleius.

Other highlights include the Gallery of Aesop, the Hall of the Caesars, the monumental staircase and the elegant inner courtyard.
